Due to the several types of dynamic analyses and the different mathematical form of each, some knowledge of both the physics of dynamics and the manner in which the physics is represented is important to using MSC Nastran effectively and efficiently for dynamic analysis. You should become familiar with the notation and terminology covered in this chapter. This knowledge will be valuable to understand the meaning of the symbols and the reasons for the procedures employed in later chapters.

Structural dynamics is a type of structural analysis which covers the behavior of a structure subjected to dynamic actions having high acceleration loading. Dynamic loads include people, wind, waves, traffic, earthquakes , and blasts. Any structure can be subjected to dynamic loading. Dynamic analysis can be used to find dynamic displacements , time history, and modal analysis. Structural analysis is mainly concerned with finding out the behavior of a physical structure when subjected to force.
This edition of the book contains corrections and additions to the July edition. Chapter 22 has been written on the direct use of absolute earthquake displacement loading acting at the base of the structure. Several new types of numerical errors for absolute displacement loading have been identified. First, the fundamental nature of displacement loading is significantly different from the base acceleration loading traditionally used in earthquake engineering. Second, a smaller integration time step is required to define the earthquake displacement and to solve the dynamic equilibrium equations. Third, a large number of modes are required for absolute displacement loading to obtain the same accuracy as produced when base acceleration is used as the loading. Fourth, the 90 percent mass participation rule, intended to assure the accuracy of the analysis, does not apply for absolute displacement loading.
