In the novel, Kavalier and Clay become major figures in the comics industry from its nascency into its Golden Age.

Critics unanimously praised the work: The New York Times found the novel to be a "towering achievement," while the Denver Post described the author as a "literary Houdini. In the process, Chabon's plot plays out against the background of America's pre-war isolationist policy that advocated an escape from moral responsibility. The novel in fact employs the metaphor of escape as a governing principle. Kavalier studies with an escape artist before escaping his natal city and the Shoah ; Sammy overcomes or escapes the limitations of his physical handicap; the Holocaust is dealt with only obliquely. The former story deals with America and the history of the comic book industry and its oppression of creative artists between and

Daniel B. Boitani reminds us that two Alexandrians, Philo and Clement —a Jew and a Christian —were the first to make analogies between the people of Israel and Odysseus See also Boitani , , Philo quotes Odyssey For better and worse it has been one long adventure — a five-thousand-year Odyssey — from the moment of the true First Commandment, when God told Abraham lech lecha: Thou shalt leave home. Thou shalt get lost. Thou shalt find slander, oppres- sion, opportunity, escape, and destruction.

Thou shalt, by definition, find adventure. Chabon Josef Kavalier is obsessed with escapism as a boy in Prague, having learned many of its secrets from his mentor Kornblum, and putting it into practice in his most successful real-life escape act: smuggling himself out of Nazi-occupied Prague in the false bottom of a coffin containing the Golem of Prague, the tense re-telling of which Chabon He spends the post-war years trying to escape from his own guilt and pain.

He survives an en- counter with the souls of the underworld, and manages to avoid their swarm- ing multitudes, and the infernal gorgoneion. He escapes the attacks of the 7. He survives the anger of the gods Aeolus, Helios and Poseidon.

In disguise, he avoids premature detection by his ser- vants, the suitors, and his own wife. Josef Kavalier, like Odysseus, survives war and its trauma, overcomes obstacles that keep him from his wife and son, and returns alone, having lost his European family and his fellow soldiers. Common Structural Elements Chabon seldom presents an exact equivalent for a Homeric model; he did not undertake this task with a copy of the Odyssey in one hand and a pencil in the other.

The correspondences are more often hinted at rather than explicit, but collectively they recall the epic in numerous ways. Recalling the Trojan Horse, Joe fools the enemy by hiding inside a sealed wooden container whose purpose is other than what it appears to be, and faces death should it be opened escaping the Nazis inside a rigged coffin that also contains the Golem8. He leaves behind a Mentor his cousin Sammy who cares for his son in his absence.

The heroes grieve over parents who died in their absence. Levine tells him that she died from grief during his absence. Each hero longs to return to his woman, who shares some of his own talent Penelope matches Odysseus in mental skill; Rosa is a talented artist in her own right. Their fam- ilies spend years wondering whether or not their men have been lost at sea. Both stories contain a Telemachia.

They plan their final home- comings in league with their sons, with whom each has secret meetings and communications. Their wives suffer the pressures of remaining faithful, and undergo un- accustomed cosmetic treatments to increase their attractiveness to other men Athena beautifies Penelope to excite the suitors; Rosa makes herself espe- cially attractive for an unnamed suitor , while simultaneously remaining faith- ful to their own Penelope resists marriage to the suitors; Rosa marries Sammy, but apparently remains chaste.

In the end, their wives accept their returning spouses hesitantly at first, but eventually, with restraint put aside, they accept them fully. Each tale ends with elaborate bed making scenes that lead to a final reunion of the hero, his mate, and their son. He reminds the reader that he is telling a story that happened in a time different from the present, much as the Homeric narrator exists at an epic remove from the story he tells.

Furthermore, the novel reinforces the temporal distance between its pres- ent narration and its past story by the use of footnotes — emphasizing that the action of the novel took place in an earlier age. Chabon thus not only makes use of the substance of the Odyssey, but also duplicates the way its story is told.

Josef Kavalier, torn from his family by the invasion of Czechoslovakia, only superficially resembles Telemachus in that he spends his pre-war years in New York trying to reunite with his father, mother and brother, desperately and in vain planning to rescue them from Nazi-occupied Prague. Sammy meets his father when he is thirteen, at which time he elicits a promise from his father to take him along on his next trip. Neither Joe nor Sammy is able satisfactorily to reconnect with their far-off fathers, and only partially fulfill the role of the epic Telemachus.

The Odyssey begins with Telemachus searching for news of his father, at the urging of Athena. Levine about his own place in his family. Athena, disguised as Mentes, asks the boy why he looks so much like Odysseus Od.

He has been raised to believe that Sammy Clay is his father, but cousin Joe Kavalier is a constant topic of discussion in his home. The information pleased him for some reason. Dur- ing his journey to seek news of his father, he hears stories of his exploits from Nestor in Pylos and Helen and Menelaus in Sparta Od. Telemachus and Tommy each secretly seek contact with their fathers, causing great distress to their mothers. Telemachus leaves on his search for Odysseus without telling Penelope, and Tommy Clay tells no one about his clandestine trips to the city to see his father Joe, who he thinks is his uncle.

Similarly, Telemachus makes secret preparations for his departure to seek his father, intentionally leaving his mother in the dark about his plans. She only discovers them, to her distress, after he has departed. Telemachus en- gages the servant Eurycleia to help him prepare for his expedition, and swears her to secrecy Od. When Penelope discovers that her son is gone, she bursts into tears, and scarcely has strength to ask the herald Medon why Telemachus has gone away 4.

Losing strength in her knees and con- fidence of heart, she falls sobbing onto the threshold of her bedroom. Sur- rounded by her weeping servants 4. His legs kicked at the pedals of an invisible bicycle His visits to Pylos, and especially Sparta, expose him to mar- vels he has never before known.

The disguised Odysseus thereafter communicates with Telemachus by secret signs as they make their plans against the suitors. The king tells his son to return to the palace and to ignore the mistreatment he will suffer in his own hall He tells him to leave swords for the two of them , and repeats the need for total secrecy When Telemachus presents himself to his mother, she hugs and kisses him, and scolds him for leaving secretly, and against her wishes, and asks him directly if he saw Odysseus.

Telemachus brushes off her criticism and evades her ques- tion The poet makes it clear that Penelope loves her son, and is vexed by his behavior, but does not take any action against him, thus allow- ing him to continue carrying out his secret activities in concert with his father.

Tommy makes the trip every Thursday for seven months, typing out a school excuse from his mother, for which Joe supplies her false signature Chabon Tommy reflects Telemachus as he eludes his mother, ex- plores the glittering new world on his own, finds his father, keeps his secrets, and maintains secret communication with him.

In Odyssey 9, Odysseus and his companions find danger within a cave filled with thick-fleeced animals and dung 9.

Joe and his dog are sleeping at the far end of the tunnel when disaster strikes: the gasoline furnace vent, blocked with snow, has sent carbon monox- ide throughout the tunnels, killing both men and dogs. The two survivors mourn their dead companions Chabon Joe picks the lock, enters, rifles through the desk drawers, and throws books and pamphlets from the bookcase onto the floor.

Ebling has written detailed notes about every issue, showing an obvious anti-Semitic fixation on this char- acter and his creators. After a tense standoff, Ebling strikes Joe several times with a blackjack, but the younger man throws the Nazi against the wall and knocks him un- conscious.

Before departing, Joe cannot resist leaving his mark. As he leaves the injured Ebling, Joe leaves another token of his identity — which will cause Ebling to hunt him down: He was about to leave when he saw the Empire Comics file, with a corner of the Ebling memorandum poking out of the top.

He opened the folder, tugged the memorandum free of its clip, and flipped it over. On the back of the last page, using his mechanical pencil, he drew a quick sketch of the Escapist in the standard pose he had de- veloped for pinups; the Master of Escape smiling, arms outstretched, the sundered halves of a pair of handcuffs braceleting his wrists.

To my pal Carl Ebling, he wrote across the bottom in big cheerful American cursive script. Lots of luck, The Escapist. They enter the cave unin- vited, explore it with curiosity, and make free with its contents, lighting a fire and consuming the food they find within.

Where did you come from over the sea? After a standoff, Odysseus and his men wound and incapacitate Polyphemus, and when they feel safe, Odysseus — like Joe — can- not resist taunting his foe and revealing his true name: Cyclops, if someone of mortal men should ever Ask about the outrage, the blinding of your eye, Recently Chabon has acknowledged that several of his books contain the theme of bad things happening to dogs.

He manages to take a pair of handcuffs from a security guard and secures himself to a desk that is bolted to the wall, recall- ing Odysseus lashed to the mast of his ship in order to hear the song of the Sirens Od. Joe Kavalier chains himself to his work place, and refuses to let himself go when others entreat him to do so — for his own safety. He will not give his Nazi nemesis the sat- isfaction of seeing him run away. He is chagrined to see that his bomb threat against Empire Comics is not even reported in the press, he even forgot to leave the note he had signed, taking credit for his deed.

In fact, he mistakenly thinks that Sam Clay — not Joe Kavalier — is the man who had in- vaded his office and left the mocking sketch and note Chabon He resolves to take more efficient revenge, however, and after discovering that his true target should be Joe Kavalier, he insinuates himself as a waiter at the hotel It is both ironic and telling of their characters that both Joe and Odysseus, the mas- ters of escape, insist on self-imposed constraint in order to reach an important goal, albeit in vastly different circumstances.

From the ceiling hung two mannequins with scallops covering their waxen breasts, and the sequined tails of hake and halibut where their legs ought to have been.

I had seen him already in bed and asleep when I arrived. In response to my insistent ringing he had at last appeared, a bleary, nightshirted figure I had been sure he wore nightshirts , fetid and protesting. I had cut through his protests decisively. I had given him no time to build up his defences. After the hearing of the Subcommittee to Investigate Juvenile Delinquency, Sam goes to a bar and reflects.
