Organizational Behavior: Definition, Importance, Nature, Model

Employees naturally behave differently at work than they do in social settings, largely due to the structured organizational environment of business. A variety of factors influence organizational behavior, including the company's structure, policies and procedures, management effectiveness and interactions between colleagues. All of these elements can inspire employees to work harder or contribute to disengagement. By understanding how to get the best out of your employees, your company can become more productive and competitive. When new employees join your company, the way they behave is heavily influenced by the organizational culture. As social beings, people strive to fit in the environment around them. If your company culture encourages employees to speak up without fear of reprisal, new employees will gain confidence in expressing their ideas, whereas if the culture is to "shoot the messenger," new employees tend to keep their opinions to themselves.

Organizational Behavior OB is the study of human behavior in organizational settings, the interface between human behavior and the organization, and the organization itself. Organizational Behavior researchers study the behavior of individuals primarily in their organizational roles. One of the main goals of organizational behavior is to revitalize organizational theory and develop a better conceptualization of organizational life. Origin of Organisational Behaviour can trace its roots back to Max Weber and earlier organizational studies. The Industrial Revolution is the period from approximately when new technologies resulted in the adoption of new manufacturing techniques, including increased mechanization. The industrial revolution led to significant social and cultural change, including new forms of organization. Analyzing these new organizational forms, sociologist Max Weber described bureaucracy as an ideal type of organization that rested on rational-legal principles and maximized technical efficiency.

Managerial Behavior and Decision Making; Personal and Situational Factors

Organizations need managers who are able to contribute significantly to the attainment of organizational goals. It is therefore necessary for organizations to select, train, develop and promote people who will be able to make such a contribution. Such studies have shown us what managers do and how they do things, but the effectiveness of these actions is still elusive. Important conclusions from these studies are firstly that situational factors are generally considered important in determining effectiveness. Secondly, effective managers have a broad repertoire of behaviors at their disposal.
