For decades, the theory of International Relations was dominated by two approaches: realism and liberalism. Constructivism had been marginalized by these mainstream theories because it focused on social construction instead of material construction Barkin, The turning point came late in the s as the collapse of the Soviet Union and the end of the Cold War made people reconsider the explanatory ability of mainstream theories Hopf,

As for its structure, this article first examines the main arguments and concepts of conventional constructivist security studies through the exploration of some of its key texts in IR.

In international relations , constructivism is the claim that significant aspects of international relations are historically and socially constructed, rather than inevitable consequences of human nature or other essential characteristics of world politics. Nicholas Onuf is usually credited with coining the term constructivism to describe theories that stress the socially constructed character of international relations. Alker, Jr. Nevertheless, Alexander Wendt is the best-known advocate of social constructivism in the field of international relations. By attempting to show that even such a core realist concept as " power politics " is socially constructed—that is, not given by nature and hence, capable of being transformed by human practice—Wendt opened the way for a generation of international relations scholars to pursue work in a wide range of issues from a constructivist perspective. Wendt further developed these ideas in his central work, Social Theory of International Politics Since the late s and early s, constructivism has become one of the major schools of thought within international relations.

Collective Identity Formation and The International State by Alexander Wendt

Collective identity is the shared sense of belonging to a group. In Alberto Melucci published Nomads of the Present , which introduces his model of collective identity based on studies of the social movements of the s. Melucci based his ideas on the writings by Touraine and Pizzorno , specifically their ideas on social movements and collective action respectively. Alberto Melucci writes: "collective identity is an interactive and shared definition produced by several individuals or groups at a more complex level and concerned with the orientation of action and the field of opportunities and constraints in which the action takes place". Unsatisfied with the gap between theories on how collective actions form and how individuals find motivation, Melucci defines an intermediate process, in which individuals recognize that they share certain orientations in common and on that basis decide to act together. He considers collective identity as a process that is negotiated over time with three parts: cognitive definition, active relationship, and emotional investments.

Constructivism is a structural theory of the international system that makes the following core claims: 1 states are the principal units of analysis for international political theory; 2 the key structures in the states system are intersubjective rather than material; and 3 state identities and interests are in important part constructed by these social structures, rather than given exogenously to the system by human nature [as neorealists maintain] or domestic politics [as neoliberals favour]. Therefore, these identities are in part dependent for their constitution on the understandings and perceptions of Others. Though today survival is increasingly identified with the preservation of possessed territorial property, its meaning differs historically, and a given state may decide to allow the surrender or secession of a part of this property to protect its national interest. Can international conditions overcome this logic and under what conditions? What in anarchy is given and immutable and what is amenable to change? Self-help and power politics are institutions, not essential features of anarchy.

The Thrust of Wendtian Constructivism
