Post-Harvest Diseases: Meaning, Classification, Types and Control

Focusing on the great variety of research being done in the field of postharvest pathology, this volume presents a collection of topics concerning the diseases of harvested fruits and vegetables. Each chapter represents a separate unit which taken together create a better understanding of the whole subject. Topics include the causal agents of postharvest diseases of fruits and vegetables, their sources and their ways of penetration into the host; factors that may accelerate the development of the pathogen in the host - and those that suppress them; a list of the main pathogens of fruits and vegetables, their hosts and the diseases elicited by them; and a detailed description of the major diseases of selected groups of fruits and solanaceous vegetable fruits. Attack mechanisms of pathogens and defense mechanisms of the host are examined as are treatments aimed at suppressing postharvest diseases. The search for natural and safe chemical compounds and the variety of alternative physical and biological methods for use in postharvest disease control are emphasized. Teachers and students who focus on postharvest pathology, scientists in research institutes, companies dealing with fruit and vegetable preservation technologies and for all those striving to improve the quality of harvested fruits and vegetables will find this book of great interest. Chapter 1.

In this article we will discuss about:- 1. Meaning of Post-Harvest Diseases 2. Classification of Post-Harvest Diseases 3. Types 4. The diseases which develop on harvested parts of the plants like seeds, fruits and also on vegetables are the post-harvested diseases.

The diseases which develop on harvested parts of the plants like seeds, fruits are known as postharvest diseases. Pathogen attack may take place during harvesting and subsequent handling, storage, marketing, and after consumer purchase. The plant parts may get infected in the field, but expression of symptoms may take place later, at any stage before final consumption. The postharvest diseases that cause spoilage of both durable and perishable commodities are widespread. Losses inflicted throughout the supply chain due to pathogen-induced diseases are the major component of food wastage and may occur at any time from preharvest to consumption.

Fruits and vegetables are an important part of a healthy diet. However, one third of fruit and vegetables are lost after harvest every year. Most losses are caused by pathogen mostly fungi infections, which lead to postharvest decay. In addition, some postharvest fungal pathogens can produce toxic secondary In addition, some postharvest fungal pathogens can produce toxic secondary metabolites i. Mycotoxin contamination may cause serious food safety issues. At present, the use of synthetic fungicides is still the main means to control postharvest diseases.

Fungal diseases result in significant losses of fruits and vegetables during handling, transportation and storage. At present, post-production fungal spoilage is predominantly controlled by using synthetic fungicides. Under the global climate change scenario and with the need for sustainable agriculture, biological control methods of fungal diseases, using antagonistic microorganisms, are emerging as ecofriendly alternatives to the use of fungicides. The potential of microbial antagonists, isolated from a diversity of natural habitats, for postharvest disease suppression has been investigated. Postharvest biocontrol systems involve tripartite interaction between microbial antagonists, the pathogen and the host, affected by environmental conditions. Several modes for fungistatic activities of microbial antagonists have been suggested, including competition for nutrients and space, mycoparasitism, secretion of antifungal antibiotics and volatile metabolites and induction of host resistance. Postharvest application of microbial antagonists is more successful for efficient disease control in comparison to pre-harvest application.

Tree Fruit Post-Harvest

Citrus is an important fruit crop grown commercially in more than countries in different agro-climatic conditions for its diversified use and increasing demand world over with about The larger part of revenue by citrus producing countries is realised through fresh fruit trade followed by its processed products and by products. The success of fresh citrus fruit export is mainly dependant on the quality of produce, phytosanitary conditions set by the importing country and WTO and the post-harvest management to minimise the decay till the consignment reaches to its destination. The citrus fruit is attacked by a number of pathogens from bloom to harvesting stage and subsequently by post-harvest pathogens that affect the production of the crop and considerably deteriorate the fruit quality.

- El queria que lo guardara.

Virtually all postharvest diseases of fruit and vegetables are caused by fungi and bacteria. In some root crops and brassicas, viral infections present before.
