Community Education

The communities of which we are a part can benefit from the resources of our faculty and students, while the courses can be educationally transformative in powerful ways. Community-based learning is also motivated by the belief that all communities have intrinsic educational assets and resources that educators can use to enhance learning experiences for students. The idea is to give students direct experience with issues they are studying in the curriculum and with ongoing efforts to analyze and solve problems in the community. A key element in these programs is the opportunity students must both apply what they are learning in real-world settings and reflect in a classroom setting on their service experiences. These programs model the idea that giving something back to the community is an important college outcome, and that working with community partners is good preparation for citizenship, work, and life. Below is an experiential learning continuum.

What is Community-Based Learning?

It is important to teach students the science of climate change and impact their personal beliefs to produce behavior that will mitigate climate change. In this study pre and post surveys focusing on climate change understanding, belief, and behavior were administered. Interviews were also conducted. The quantitative and qualitative data were conflicting, but through triangulated data analysis learning design elements promoting Climate Change Literacy in higher education were identified. A conceptual model was developed with the learning design elements to improve the teaching of Climate Change Literacy.

Getting Started With Place-Based Education, Step-by-Step

This article discusses the way pre-service teachers started to become aware of the need to establish relationships between community resources linguistic, social, and cultural and their role as individuals and teachers to enact critical pedagogy. This qualitative exploration was developed with three different groups of students in an English undergraduate program in a public university. The outcomes of this study brought to light how pre-service began making connections between the principles of community based pedagogy and the language curriculum in the schools. Language teacher education programs not only have the responsibility of guaranteeing the linguistic and pedagogical development of our pre-service teachers, but also the social commitment of helping them become critical readers of their society and agents of social transformation. As Freire states, in order to engage social transformation, our learners need to realize that they are makers of culture and they are owners of reading and writing, able to read their realities.
