Pakistan pollution: Teens fight to save Lahore from toxic air

Climate change in Pakistan is expected to cause wide-ranging effects on the environment and people in Pakistan. As a result of ongoing climate change , the climate of Pakistan has become increasingly volatile over the past several decades; this trend is expected to continue into the future. In addition to increased heat, drought and extreme weather conditions in some parts of the country, the melting of glaciers in the Himalayas threatens many of the most important rivers of Pakistan. Between and , Pakistan was ranked the 5th worst affected country in terms of extreme climate caused by climate change. Pakistan contributes little to global greenhouse gas GhG emissions, yet it is very vulnerable to the effects of climate change.

A pneumonia-like disease of unknown origin caused a catastrophe in Wuhan city, China. This disease spread to countries affecting a wide range of people. This pandemic compelled countries to enforce a socio-economic lockdown to prevent its widespread. This paper focuses on how the particulate matter pollution was reduced during the lockdown period 23 March to April 15, as compared to before lockdown. Both ground-based and satellite observations were used to identify the improvement in air quality of Pakistan with primary focus on four major cities of Lahore, Islamabad, Karachi and Peshawar. Both datasets have shown a substantial reduction in PM 2. However, it can be partially attributed to both higher rate of population density and frequent exposure of population to enhanced levels of PM 2.

When Nariman Qureshi returned to her home in Lahore after a week-long work trip in early November, she discovered her five-year-old daughter Anya had spent two nights in intensive care. The reason was her asthma, which had flared up severely. For Qureshi, it was the cost she had to pay for living in a city whose air quality is among the worst in the world, and which has spent last week either on top, or among the top five worst cities in the world to breathe in. I wonder if we were elsewhere, maybe that wouldn't have been the case," Qureshi says. Delhi may have been hitting the headlines this week, but by the evening of 6 November, Lahore had taken the title of the world's most unbreathable city - with an Air Quality Index AQI of , forcing the provincial government to announce closure of all schools in the province on Thursday.

Environmentalists say Pakistan is particularly vulnerable to the effects of climate change, and government efforts addressing forests and greenhouse gas emissions do not go far enough. Torrential rainfall in Pakistan claimed more than lives last week, while causing widespread property and infrastructure damage.

When she returned home, she found her children playing in a narrow alley, their eyes red and watering. Last year, almost 60, Pakistanis died from the high level of fine particulate matter in the air, among the highest death tolls in the world from air pollution, according to the World Health Organisation WHO. Although the environmental body has recommended the government mandate low-sulphur diesel and increase higher public transport use, these results have been slow to materialise. And natural urban barriers to air pollution have increasingly disappeared. In the past year alone, Lahore cut down more than 2, trees in the city, removing a natural carbon sink able to absorb some of the large quantities of carbon dioxide and fine particulate matter released into the air. Reducing deaths from air pollution is one of the aims of the sustainable development goals. It is uncertain how Pakistan can achieve this.
