Isaac Newton's reputation was initially established by his paper on the refraction of light through a prism; this is now seen as a ground-breaking account and the foundation of modern optics. In it, he claimed to refute Cartesian ideas of light modification by definitively demonstrating that the refrangibility of a ray is linked to its colour, hence arguing that colour is an intrinsic property of light and does not arise from passing through a medium. Newton's later significance as a world-famous scientific genius and the apparent confirmation of his experimental results have tended to obscure the realities of his reception at the time.
You've probably heard of Isaac Newton. He is dead famous for: discovering gravity, being a right clever dick and getting hit on the head with an apple. But have you heard that Isaac: came bottom of the class at school, poked sticks in his eye and nearly blinded himself and nearly got himself executed?
Newton also made seminal contributions to optics , and shares credit with Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz for developing the infinitesimal calculus. In Principia , Newton formulated the laws of motion and universal gravitation that formed the dominant scientific viewpoint until it was superseded by the theory of relativity. Newton used his mathematical description of gravity to derive Kepler's laws of planetary motion , account for tides , the trajectories of comets , the precession of the equinoxes and other phenomena, eradicating doubt about the Solar System 's heliocentricity. He demonstrated that the motion of objects on Earth and celestial bodies could be accounted for by the same principles. Newton's inference that the Earth is an oblate spheroid was later confirmed by the geodetic measurements of Maupertuis , La Condamine , and others, convincing most European scientists of the superiority of Newtonian mechanics over earlier systems.
University A to Z Departments. Growing in a courtyard garden in the Physics Department here in the University of York we have a grafted cutting from an ancient apple tree which still survives in Newton's garden at Woolsthorpe Manor, his birthplace in Lincolnshire. This is the tree from which it is reputed that Newton saw an apple fall in the late summer of and which caused him to speculate upon the nature of gravitation. Our tree was given to us by Kew Gardens in The account of Isaac Newton's discovering the principle of universal gravitation by observing the fall of an apple is very well known and usually dismissed as apocryphal.
He is well known for his work on the laws of motion, optics, gravity, and calculus. In , Newton published a book called the Philosophi Naturalis Principia Mathematica in which he presents his theory of universal gravitation and three laws of motion. Everyone knows the story of the apply falling on Newtons head, but this famous tale is a misconception that is regularly resurrected in everything from cartoons to computer ads. Newton told a number of people about the occasion, but did not always mention the apple. His father had died three months earlier, and baby Isaac, very premature, was also not expected to survive.

On Christmas-day, in the year , Isaac Newton was born, at the small village of Woolsthorpe, in England. Little did his mother think, when she beheld her new-born babe, that he was destined to explain many matters which had been a mystery ever since the creation of the world. Isaac's father being dead, Mrs. Newton was married again to a clergyman, and went to reside at North Witham. Her son was left to the care of his good old grandmother, who was very kind to him, and sent him to school. In his early years, Isaac did not appear to be a very bright scholar, but was chiefly remarkable for his ingenuity in all mechanical occupations. He had a set of little tools, and saws of various sizes, manufactured by himself.

The Newton Project. The following Memoirs of this great man by some may be accounted trivial. The scituation I was then in, gave me no further opportunity of inquiry, than what I have here done. Such is chiefly the present work. But in that especially of so great a man, every reader burns with a desire of knowing somewhat of the primordia , the preparation and presages of his extraordinary abilitys; of the height to which he carryed; and the foundation on which he built, a new philosophy.
The following are thoughts on 2 of the most well-known phrases in the English language, recognized as universal academic icons. That of Juliet Capuleto's in Act II, scene II, "The Balcony", in the immortal work of William shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet about " A rose by any other name" , and " On the shoulders of giants" , traditionally attributed to Isaac Newton, the discoverer of the Mechanical Universal Laws, including that of Universal Law of Gravitation, in the 17 th Century, but in reality first said by the humanistic philosopher and theologist Bernard of Chartres in the 12 th Century.. People around the world have dedicated time and space in an attempt to answer the question: "What is the meaning of a name? In addition to differentiating one person from another, a name certifies, fundamentally in the Jewish culture, a person's degree of communion with spirituality; the concept of "shem Tov" good name.
